Battle context

The Battle of Sungei Koemba was an episode within Operation Claret, the covert British-Commonwealth cross-border campaign conducted from Sarawak into Indonesian Kalimantan during the Indonesia–Malaysia confrontation. The 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment executed a series of ambushes along the Sungei Koemba river, targeting Indonesian forces up to 10,000 yards inside Indonesian territory. Operation Claret's strategic logic was attrition and disruption: by interdicting Indonesian movement and resupply lines, Commonwealth units sought to degrade Indonesian offensive capacity and keep enemy forces reactive rather than threatening. The action at Sungei Koemba was one expression of that pressure, demonstrating Australian participation in an operationally sensitive campaign that remained classified for years after the confrontation ended in 1966.
