The Battle of Šumatovac, fought near Aleksinac in central Serbia, produced a notable tactical victory for Serbian forces despite facing an Ottoman army many times their size. With Serbia fielding an estimated 3,000–4,000 troops against an Ottoman force of roughly 30,000, the result demonstrated that entrenched defensive positions could offset severe numerical disadvantage. The engagement inflicted approximately 1,000 Ottoman casualties while the Serbian position held, providing a rare early success for Serbia in the 1876 war against the Ottoman Empire. The outcome carried operational weight in that it checked Ottoman momentum in the Aleksinac sector, though the broader struggle between Serbia and the Ottoman Empire continued.
