The Battle of Sudoměř, fought on 25 March 1420, was the second major engagement of the Hussite Wars and the first to constitute a genuine pitched battle, distinguishing it from the preceding Battle of Nekmíř, which the overview characterizes as more of a Hussite retreat than a true fight. The Hussite forces, led by Břeněk of Švihov and Jan Žižka, defeated the Catholic Landfrieden coalition despite facing a numerically significant opposing force of 2,000. Břeněk of Švihov was killed in the engagement, making him one of the earliest named Hussite commanders to fall in the conflict. The Hussite victory at Sudoměř demonstrated early in the war that Catholic forces could be defeated in open battle, with Jan Žižka emerging as a victorious field commander at a formative stage of the conflict.
