Battle context

The Battle of Stromboli on 8 January 1676 was a naval engagement between a French fleet of 20 ships under Abraham Duquesne and a combined allied fleet of 19 ships under Lieutenant-Admiral-General Michiel de Ruyter, fought in the context of the Franco-Dutch War. The engagement lasted eight hours without producing a decisive result, leaving the broader naval contest in the Mediterranean unresolved. Its immediate consequence was that the opposing fleets remained in contact, fighting again several months later at the Battle of Augusta in April, indicating that Stromboli settled neither the strategic balance nor the operational initiative between the two sides. The battle is also known as the Second Battle of Stromboli or the Battle of Alicudi, reflecting some ambiguity in how contemporaries and later historians identified the engagement.
