Battle of Stony Lake

Battle context

The Battle of Stony Lake was the third and final engagement of Sibley's 1863 campaign into Dakota Territory against the Santee, Yankton, Yanktonai, and Teton Sioux. Although the outcome was not recorded as a decisive victory or defeat, the battle effectively ended the offensive phase of Sibley's pursuit. Following the engagement, the Sioux forces conducted delaying actions to protect their non-combatants, holding Sibley's column in check long enough for their women and children to cross the Missouri River. Once that crossing was complete, Sibley abandoned the chase. The campaign thus closed without the destruction or capitulation of the Sioux bands, leaving them intact west of the Missouri and deferring further conflict to subsequent operations in the broader Sioux Wars.
