Overview

The Battle of St. Jakob an der Birs was fought between the Old Swiss Confederacy and French mercenaries, on the banks of the river Birs. The battle took place on 26 August 1444 and was part of the Old Zürich War. The site of the battle was near Münchenstein, Switzerland, just over 1 km outside the city walls of Basel, today within Basel's St-Alban district.

Significance

The Battle of St. Jakob an der Birs pitted a Swiss Confederacy force of approximately 1,500 against a French mercenary army numbering between 30,000 and 40,000, fought on the banks of the river Birs near Münchenstein, just outside the walls of Basel. The engagement occurred within the context of the Old Zürich War, in which French forces under Louis, Dauphin of France, and Antoine de Chabannes had been deployed against the Confederacy. The disparity in scale between the two forces makes the casualty figures particularly notable: the French suffered around 2,000 dead while the Swiss contingent of 1,500 was largely destroyed, sustaining between 1,200 and 1,500 casualties. That a force of this size inflicted such losses on an army more than twenty times its strength left a pronounced impression on contemporaries and shaped subsequent perceptions of Swiss military effectiveness. The battle is remembered as a demonstration of the ferocity with which Swiss infantry engaged even vastly superior opponents during the mid-fifteenth century conflicts of the Confederation.
