Battle context

Spotsylvania Court House was the second major engagement of Grant and Meade's 1864 Overland Campaign, fought from May 8 through May 21 in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. Following the inconclusive Battle of the Wilderness, Grant moved southeast to draw Lee into a more favorable engagement, but Confederate forces reached the critical Spotsylvania Court House crossroads first and entrenched. The battle ended without a clear tactical decision: the Confederacy claimed success for holding its defensive lines, while the United States claimed success because the Federal offensive continued and Lee's army absorbed losses it could not replace. With nearly 32,000 combined casualties, it was the costliest battle of the Overland Campaign. The engagement reinforced the campaign's central dynamic — Grant sustaining pressure despite heavy losses, and Lee's army suffering attrition it lacked the manpower to recover from.
