Battle context
The Battle of Spion Kop formed part of the British campaign to relieve Ladysmith, which had been under Boer siege during the opening months of the Second Boer War. British forces under Buller and Warren, numbering around 20,000, attempted to seize the hilltop of Spioen Kop roughly 38 kilometers west-southwest of Ladysmith, but the assault ended in a Boer victory. The engagement cost the British approximately 1,250 casualties against a defending Boer force of some 8,000, a significant reversal that prolonged the siege of Ladysmith and set back the broader British relief effort in Natal. The defeat underscored the difficulty of dislodging entrenched Boer positions on commanding terrain, a problem that had already defined the early phase of the war.
