Battle context

The Battle of Solferino on 24 June 1859 was the climactic engagement of the Second Italian War of Independence, ending in victory for the allied French and Piedmont-Sardinian forces over the Austrian army under Emperor Franz Joseph I. With roughly 300,000 soldiers present across both sides, it was the largest battle since Leipzig in 1813, and the outcome effectively decided the war's direction in northern Italy. The defeat prompted Franz Joseph to relinquish personal command of his forces, a direct institutional consequence of the battle's result. Solferino also holds a distinct place in military history as the last major engagement in which all opposing armies were simultaneously commanded in the field by their reigning monarchs, marking a transition in how European powers organized supreme command.
