Sobraon was the decisive engagement of the First Anglo-Sikh War, ending Sikh Khalsa resistance to East India Company forces. The Sikh army, numbering some 26,000, was completely defeated by a British force of approximately 20,000, suffering casualties estimated between 5,000 and 10,000 including the death of commander Sham Singh Attariwala. The scale of the defeat effectively broke organized Sikh military opposition and determined the outcome of the war, opening the way for a British-imposed settlement.
