The Battle of Slivice, fought on 11–12 May 1945, stands as the last large World War II battle in the Czech lands, occurring after Germany's formal surrender. A German force of approximately 7,000 men sought to reach American lines and surrender to U.S. forces rather than fall into Soviet hands. Blocked by local partisans and Red Army units, they were compelled to fight. By the early hours of May 12 the Germans capitulated, with roughly 6,000 men taken prisoner by Soviet troops. The battle illustrates the fractured final days of the war in Central Europe, where German units made tactical decisions shaped less by military objectives than by which Allied power they preferred to surrender to — a preference that, at Slivice, went unfulfilled.
