Battle context

The Battle of Slankamen, fought on 19 August 1691 near Slankamen in the Ottoman Sanjak of Syrmia, was a major engagement of the Great Turkish War between Habsburg Austrian forces and the Ottoman Empire. The scale of losses on both sides attests to the intensity of the confrontation: the Holy Roman Empire suffered approximately 7,300 casualties against an Ottoman force of 50,000, while Ottoman losses reached an estimated 25,000 — a figure that dwarfed the Habsburg toll and pointed to a decisive Habsburg tactical success despite the significant disparity in force sizes. Among the Ottoman commanders present was Mustafa Köprülü, whose death or defeat at engagements of this kind carried strategic consequences for Ottoman command continuity during the war. On the Habsburg side, Ludwig Wilhelm's leadership anchored a force estimated between 20,000 and 33,000. The battle formed part of the broader Habsburg offensive momentum that characterized the later phases of the Great Turkish War, a conflict that would culminate in the Treaty of Karlowitz in 1699 and a significant Ottoman territorial retreat in central Europe.
