Battle context
The Battle of Siversk occurred within the broader Battle of Donbas, the second strategic phase of Russia's invasion of Ukraine following the initial three-pronged assault. The Donbas offensive, launched on 18 April 2022, concentrated Russian and Ukrainian forces in the eastern theater as Russia sought to consolidate control over the Donbas region. With Russian forces numbered between 55,000 and 70,000 against a Ukrainian force of 40,000 to 50,000, the engagement reflected the large-scale conventional character of the eastern front. Russian casualties of 5,154 recorded in connection with this phase underscore the attrition costs incurred in urban terrain during the campaign.
