Battle context
The Battle of Sirte in spring 2015 marked a critical phase in ISIL's territorial expansion within Libya. Having established a presence in Sirte since February 2015, ISIL forces under Abu Nabil al-Anbari consolidated control over the city and extended their reach to neighboring Nofaliya before the Tripoli-based government moved to contest the area. The fall of Nofaliya to ISIL prompted the government to deploy reinforcements via the Libya Shield Force in an attempt to recapture Sirte, underscoring how quickly ISIL had become a significant territorial actor in central Libya. With an estimated 2,000 fighters committed, the engagement reflected the scale of ISIL's Libyan branch and the difficulty government-aligned forces faced in reversing its gains during the broader fragmentation of the Libyan Civil War.
