The Battle of Signal Hill on 15 September 1762 was the final engagement of the French and Indian War, the North American theater of the Seven Years' War. A British force of 1,559 under Lieutenant-Colonel William Amherst retook St. John's from French forces under Guillaume de Bellecombe, who had seized the settlement earlier that year in a surprise attack. The recapture restored British control over St. John's and ended offensive French operations in North America, closing the continental conflict ahead of the broader Seven Years' War's conclusion by treaty the following year.
