Battle of Semur River

Overview

Battle of Semur River was an armed encounter which took place on 25 March 1950 between the Malay Regiment and the gunmens of Malayan Communist Party during the Malayan Emergency. Seventeen soldiers of the Malay Regiment, from 12th Platoon of Delta Company were killed by the rebels, and eight wounded. Twenty-nine communist insurgents were also killed by the Malayan soldiers.

Significance

The engagement at Semur River on 25 March 1950 resulted in significant casualties on both sides. The Malay Regiment's 12th Platoon of Delta Company suffered seventeen soldiers killed and eight wounded, making it a costly encounter for Commonwealth ground forces at a point when the Emergency was still in its early phase. The twenty-nine insurgents killed represented a substantial loss for the Malayan Communist Party's armed wing.
