Battle context
The Battle of Șelimbăr, fought near the village of Șelimbăr close to Sibiu, was an engagement between the Wallachian army under Michael the Brave and the Transylvanian-Hungarian army under Andrew Báthory during the Long War. The confrontation placed two significant commanders — Michael the Brave alongside Starina Novak on the Wallachian side, and Andrew Báthory with Gaspar Kornis leading the Transylvanian-Hungarian forces — against one another in a contest over Transylvania. With Wallachian forces numbering between 20,000 and 30,000 against a Transylvanian-Hungarian force of 15,000 to 25,000, the engagement involved substantial armies on both sides. Casualties — roughly 1,000 on the Wallachian side and between 1,200 and 1,500 on the Transylvanian-Hungarian side — indicate hard fighting. The battle forms part of the broader struggle among Danubian powers during the Long War, in which control of Transylvania carried significant strategic weight for the wider conflict between Christian states and the Ottoman Empire.
