The Battle of Seival, fought on 10 September 1836 between Ragamuffin rebel forces and Imperial Brazilian troops, carried immediate political consequences that extended well beyond the engagement itself. The rebel victory directly precipitated the proclamation of the Riograndense Republic, a breakaway state separating from the Empire of Brazil. Occurring in the early stages of the Farroupilha Revolution, Seival thus marked a turning point at which the conflict shifted from armed insurgency to formal secessionist statehood, fundamentally raising the political stakes of the war for both sides.
