Battle context

The Battle of Sedan on 1–2 September 1870 resulted in the capture of Emperor Napoleon III and over a hundred thousand French troops, a defeat of such scale that it effectively decided the Franco-Prussian War in favor of Prussia and its allies. The loss of the emperor himself destroyed the political foundation of the Second French Empire. Despite this decisive outcome, fighting continued after a new French government was established, prolonging the war beyond Sedan's immediate consequences. The engagement stands as the pivotal moment of the conflict: no subsequent French military effort could recover the strategic position lost when an entire army and its sovereign commander were taken from the field.
