Battle context

The Battle of Savitaipal on June 3, 1790 resulted in a Swedish defeat during the final phase of the Russo-Swedish War of 1788–1790. Commanded by Gustaf Mauritz Armfelt, the Swedish force of 1,800 was compelled to withdraw after sustaining losses the sources variously record as 372 killed, wounded, and captured by Swedish accounts, or 750 by Russian figures. Russian casualties were estimated at 60 by their own sources, though Swedish claims put Russian losses at 800. The sharply divergent casualty figures reflect the contested nature of reporting on both sides. The engagement contributed to the broader pressure on Swedish forces in the land theater as the war moved toward its conclusion with the Treaty of Värälä later in 1790.
