The Battle of San Juan del Monte, also known as the Battle of Pinaglabanan, is recognized as the first major battle of the Philippine Revolution, the armed movement that sought Philippine independence from Spain. The engagement marked the transition of the Katipunan from a clandestine revolutionary organization into an open armed force. The first battle cry of the Katipunan was raised the night before the battle, coinciding with the pealing of church bells at nine o'clock on the night of August 29, 1896, an event that signaled the formal outbreak of hostilities. With approximately 1,000 Katipunan fighters committed to the action under Andrés Bonifacio and Emilio Jacinto, the battle established the revolutionary movement as a military actor confronting Spanish colonial authority directly, setting the stage for the wider armed conflict that would define the revolution.
