Battle context
The Battle of Samarra occurred during the Roman emperor Julian's invasion of the Sasanian Empire, in the context of his army's withdrawal after failing to take Ctesiphon. Having reached the gates of the Sasanian capital without securing the city, Julian faced the critical problem of dwindling provisions while deep in enemy territory. The march toward Samarra represented a forced strategic retreat under pressure, turning what had begun as an offensive campaign into a vulnerable withdrawal. The engagement at Samarra thus falls within a broader operational failure: the inability to capitalize on the advance to Ctesiphon left Roman forces exposed, and the circumstances of the withdrawal shaped the outcome of Julian's entire Persian campaign.
