Battle of Salamanca

Overview

The Battle of Salamanca took place on 22 July 1812. An Anglo-Portuguese army under the Earl of Wellington defeated Marshal Auguste Marmont's French forces at Arapiles, south of Salamanca, Spain, during the Peninsular War. A Spanish division was also present but took no part in the battle.

Significance

The Battle of Salamanca on 22 July 1812 saw Wellington's Anglo-Portuguese army defeat Marshal Marmont's French forces at Arapiles, south of Salamanca, during the Peninsular War. French casualties substantially exceeded those of the Anglo-Portuguese force, reflecting the scale of the reversal. A Spanish division was present but did not participate in the fighting. The engagement was a significant Allied operational success in the Iberian theater, delivered against a French army of comparable or slightly inferior size to Wellington's combined force.
