Battle context

The Battle of Sakarya was an engagement in the Greco-Turkish War of 1919–1922, fought between a Greek force of 120,000 and an Ankara Government force of approximately 96,000 men under Mustafa Kemal Pasha, Fevzi Pasha, and İsmet Pasha. Greek casualties reached roughly 4,000 against approximately 3,700 on the Ankara side. The battle is identified as an important engagement in the wider conflict, which ultimately determined the fate of Greek military presence in Anatolia and the survival of the Ankara Government as the organizing force of Turkish national resistance. Command on the Greek side involved Constantine I, Anastasios Papoulas, and Prince Andrew, reflecting the high command priority both sides assigned to this confrontation.
