Battle of Sahagún

Significance

The Battle of Sahagún was a cavalry engagement fought during the British advance into Spain under Lieutenant-General Sir John Moore in December 1808. A force of approximately 400 British hussars under Lord Paget engaged and defeated a substantially larger French cavalry force of up to 800 men led by Brigade-General Debelle, inflicting over 300 casualties—primarily captured—at a cost of fewer than 30 British killed and wounded. The action formed part of Moore's broader operational entry into Spain, a campaign aimed at supporting Spanish resistance to French occupation during the early phase of the Peninsular War. The lopsided outcome demonstrated the combat effectiveness of British cavalry against a numerically superior opponent and contributed to the momentum of Moore's thrust into the Peninsula, though that advance would ultimately culminate in the difficult retreat to Corunna weeks later.
