Battle of Saguntum

Overview

The Battle of Saguntum saw the Imperial French Army of Aragon under Marshal Louis Gabriel Suchet fighting a Spanish army led by Captain General Joaquín Blake. The Spanish attempt to raise the siege of the Sagunto Castle failed when the French, Italians, and Poles drove their troops off the battlefield in rout. The action took place during the Peninsular War, part of the Napoleonic Wars. Sagunto lies a short distance from the east coast of Spain, about 30 kilometres (19 mi) north of Valencia.

Significance

The Battle of Saguntum was fought as a Spanish effort to break the French siege of Sagunto Castle. The Army of Aragon under Marshal Suchet, composed of French, Italian, and Polish troops, defeated a substantially larger Spanish force under Captain General Joaquín Blake, routing it from the field at a casualty ratio heavily favoring the French. Spanish losses ran to roughly 5,700–6,000 against approximately 1,000 French. The failure to relieve Sagunto Castle left the fortification's fate sealed and exposed the road toward Valencia, the major city some 30 kilometres to the south. Within the broader Peninsular War context, Suchet's ability to hold siege lines while simultaneously defeating a relief army demonstrated French operational control over eastern Spain at this stage of the conflict, and the collapse of Blake's force removed the principal Spanish field army capable of contesting the region.
