Overview

The Battle of Rusçuk (Ruse) was fought on 2 and 4 July [O.S. 20 and 22 June] 1811 during the Rusçuk–Slobozia operation within the Russo-Turkish War of 1806–1812. In it, General Mikhail Kutuzov's Russian troops defeated the Turkish troops of Vizier Laz Aziz Ahmed Pasha at the town of Ruse, then called Rusçuk.

Significance

The Battle of Ruschuk was a pivotal engagement within the Rusçuk–Slobozia operation of the Russo-Turkish War of 1806–1812. Kutuzov's Russian force, numbering between 15,000 and 20,000 troops, defeated a substantially larger Ottoman army of 60,000 under Vizier Laz Aziz Ahmed Pasha, inflicting approximately 3,500 Ottoman casualties. The victory at the town of Ruse contributed to Russian strategic momentum in the broader Danubian theater and formed part of the operation that would bear the town's name alongside Slobozia. The engagement demonstrated Kutuzov's capacity to overcome significant numerical disadvantage against Ottoman forces, reinforcing Russian operational dominance in the closing phase of the war.
