Battle of Rovaniemi

Overview

The Battle of Rovaniemi was an event during the 1944 Lapland War. The actual fighting between the components of the Finnish Armoured Division and Finnish 3rd Division against the troops of the German Twentieth Mountain Army took place at the vicinity of the town of Rovaniemi. The notoriety of the encounter derives from the near-total destruction of the town.

Significance

The Battle of Rovaniemi was part of the Lapland War, the conflict in which Finland moved against German forces following Finland's separate peace with the Soviet Union. Fighting between elements of the Finnish Armoured Division and the Finnish 3rd Division against troops of the German Twentieth Mountain Army took place near the town of Rovaniemi. The engagement is primarily remembered not for its operational outcome but for the near-total destruction of the town itself, which became the most visible symbol of the destruction wrought during the Lapland campaign. German casualties are recorded at between 101 and 164, while Finnish forces numbered approximately 1,500 engaged in the vicinity.
