Battle context
The Battle of Romania encompassed a series of Soviet operations in and around Romania in 1944 that collectively produced a decisive shift on the southern Eastern Front. Soviet forces under Malinovsky and Tolbukhin defeated Axis forces in the region, inflicting approximately 500,000 casualties on German and associated forces. The campaign's most consequential political outcome was Romania's change of sides: formerly an Axis partner under Ion Antonescu, Romania under King Michael I realigned with the Soviet Union, transforming its armed forces from German auxiliaries into participants on the Soviet side. Soviet and Romanian forces then drove remaining German units back into Hungary, extending the front westward and foreclosing any German ability to stabilize a defensive line in the southeastern theater. The loss of Romania also cost Germany access to the Ploiești oil fields, a critical fuel source for Axis operations.
