The Battle of Ridgeway was the largest engagement of the Fenian Raids, a series of incursions by Irish-American irregular forces across the Canadian border aimed at pressuring Britain over Irish independence. Fought near Fort Erie along the Niagara frontier, it pitted roughly 550 Fenians under John O'Neill against an 850-strong Canadian force under Alfred Booker. The engagement holds a distinct place in Canadian military history as the first modern industrial-era battle fought by Canadian troops and the first conducted entirely under Canadian command without British regular officers. Its designation as a National Historic Site in 1921 reflects its enduring symbolic weight. It also stands as the last battle fought within the current boundaries of Ontario against a foreign invasion, marking the outer edge of the Fenian threat to Canadian territory during the 1866–1871 raids.
