Battle of Rhandeia

Significance

The Battle of Rhandeia, fought in the spring of 62 AD near Rhandeia northeast of Melitene, marked a pivotal moment in the Roman–Parthian contest for dominance over Armenia. Roman forces under Lucius Caesennius Paetus faced a combined Armenian-Parthian alliance led by Tiridates I and Vologases I, representing the two major powers of the eastern world in direct confrontation over control of the Armenian kingdom. The engagement formed part of the broader Roman–Parthian Wars, in which Armenia functioned as a contested buffer state whose rulership carried strategic and prestige consequences for both empires. The convergence of Parthian and Armenian forces against a single Roman commander underscored how deeply the two powers had aligned their interests against Roman influence in the region at this stage of the conflict.
