Battle of Redon

Battle context

The Battle of Redon resulted in a Chouan victory and the occupation of the town of Redon. The engagement took place during the Chouannerie, the royalist insurgency in western France, and demonstrated the capacity of Chouan forces to seize and hold urban centers against Imperial French troops. With a reported force of 5,000 Chouans against 120 Imperial soldiers, the disparity in numbers was decisive in determining the outcome. The occupation of Redon represented a tangible territorial gain for the royalist movement, illustrating the periodic ability of Chouan formations to extend their control beyond rural and forested strongholds into towns of regional significance.
