Battle context

The Battle of Rautu was fought between 21 February and 5 April 1918 as part of the Finnish Civil War, pitting Finnish White forces against Finnish Red forces supported by Russian Bolsheviks. The engagement lasted over six weeks, indicating sustained contest for the position. The Red side fielded roughly 2,700 troops against a White force of approximately 2,000, yet Red casualties reached approximately 1,200 — a figure suggesting the Whites inflicted disproportionate losses on their opponents. The presence of Russian Bolshevik support on the Red side reflected the broader internationalized dimension of the Finnish Civil War, in which the Reds drew on Soviet backing while the Whites ultimately prevailed in the wider conflict. A battle resulting in such heavy Red casualties would have degraded Red operational capacity in the region during a critical phase of the war.
