Battle context

Rangiriri was the decisive engagement of the Waikato invasion, pitting more than 1,400 British troops against roughly 500 Kingitanga warriors resisting the expansion of British settlement and colonial rule in the North Island. The battle produced the heaviest casualties of any engagement in the New Zealand land wars and ended with the capture of 180 Māori prisoners, a double blow that substantially degraded the Kingitanga's capacity to continue organized resistance against the numerically superior British force. The combination of battlefield losses and mass capture accelerated the collapse of coordinated Kingitanga opposition in Waikato, advancing British colonial consolidation over the region.
