Battle context
The Battle of Rancagua ended the Chilean Patria Vieja — the first period of patriot self-governance in Chile — and served as the decisive step in the Spanish military Reconquest of Chile. Royalist forces under Mariano Osorio, numbering approximately 5,000, defeated a Chilean patriot force of around 4,000 under Bernardo O'Higgins, reversing the gains of the independence movement and restoring Spanish colonial authority. The battle is known in Chilean historical memory as the Disaster of Rancagua, reflecting its magnitude as a setback: it effectively collapsed the patriot government and forced O'Higgins and other independence leaders to flee across the Andes into Argentina. From there, O'Higgins would later return with Río de la Plata support to resume the independence campaign, making Rancagua both the low point of Chilean patriot fortunes and the event that reoriented the independence effort toward eventual recovery.
