Battle context

The Battle of Ramnagar was an early engagement of the Second Anglo-Sikh War, fought on 22 November 1848 between British forces under Sir Hugh Gough and Sikh forces under Raja Sher Singh Attariwalla. The Sikhs successfully repelled an attempted British surprise attack, representing an early check on British offensive operations in the campaign. With the Sikh force numbering 23,000, the engagement demonstrated that Sikh resistance remained organized and capable of frustrating British initiative in the opening phase of the war.
