Battle of Raismes

Battle context

The Battle of Raismes was fought as part of the Flanders Campaign during the War of the First Coalition, with the French Republican army under Dampierre attempting to break the Allied siege of Condé. The effort failed: the French, though initially driving back a Prussian force, were halted when British reinforcements stabilized the Allied line, and the Allies retook the contested ground two days later. French casualties reached 2,100, and the army's commander, Dampierre, was fatally wounded leading a final assault, leaving the Republican forces both bloodied and leaderless. The failure to relieve Condé left the fortress exposed and underscored the persistent command and numerical difficulties facing the French army in the Low Countries at this stage of the campaign, where the Coalition fielded roughly twice the French force strength.
