Battle of Rain

Overview

The Battle of Rain took place on 15 April 1632 near Rain in Bavaria during the Thirty Years' War. A Swedish army under Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden defeated a Catholic League force led by Johann Tserclaes, Count of Tilly, who later died of wounds received in the battle.

Significance

The Battle of Rain, fought near Rain in Bavaria in April 1632, resulted in a Swedish victory over a Catholic League army commanded by Count Tilly. The engagement carried immediate consequences for the Catholic League's leadership: Tilly, one of the most experienced commanders on the Imperial-Catholic side in the Thirty Years' War, received wounds in the battle from which he later died. Sweden, under Gustavus Adolphus, fielded a substantially larger force — 37,500 against 22,000 — and the defeat further eroded Catholic League operational capacity in the Bavarian theater. The loss of Tilly removed a central figure who had led Catholic League forces through much of the war's earlier phases, and his death represented a significant blow to the command structure opposing Swedish intervention in the conflict.
