Battle context

The Battle of Qala-i-Jangi was a six-day engagement in northern Afghanistan arising from a prisoner uprising among Taliban detainees held by U.S.-led coalition forces. Beginning on 25 November 2001, the battle unfolded in the immediate aftermath of the coalition intervention to overthrow the Taliban's Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, which had been harboring al-Qaeda operatives. The uprising tested coalition and Northern Alliance capacity to manage large-scale prisoner detention under active combat conditions. Northern Alliance forces under Abdul Rashid Dostum, supported by U.S. personnel including Mark E. Mitchell, sustained approximately 250 casualties, while Taliban prisoners suffered losses reportedly reaching 500 — figures that reflect the intensity and duration of the engagement. The battle underscored the operational complications that accompanied the rapid collapse of Taliban control in late 2001, particularly the challenge of securing large numbers of enemy combatants while combat operations remained ongoing across the country.
