Battle context
The Battle of Prome represented the final Burmese attempt to expel British forces from Lower Burma during the First Anglo-Burmese War. Despite fielding a force of roughly 13,000 against a British army of approximately 3,000 under Gen. Archibald Campbell, the Burmese suffered defeat, undermining their ability to contest British control of the region. The British advance northward following the battle directly threatened Ava, the Burmese capital, compelling the Kingdom of Burma to enter peace negotiations. The battle thus effectively ended organized Burmese military resistance in Lower Burma and set the conditions for the diplomatic settlement that concluded the war.
