Battle context

The Battle of Prague, fought on 1 January 1648, occurred in the final year of the Thirty Years' War, a conflict that had devastated Central Europe since 1618. The engagement pitted a Swedish Empire force of 7,500 troops under Hans Christoff von Königsmarck, Prince Carl Gustaf, Arvid Wittenberg, and Ernst Odowalsky against a Bohemian garrison of 2,000 commanded by Count Rudolph Colloredo-Wallsee, Jiří Plachý, and Hans Georg Kauffer. The marked disparity in force sizes — nearly four to one in Swedish favor — reflects the weakened position of Bohemia and its Habsburg defenders at this late stage of the war. Prague, as the capital of Bohemia and the city where the conflict had effectively begun with the Defenestration of 1618, carried considerable symbolic weight. Fighting there in the war's closing months underscored how far the Swedish Empire's power projection had extended into the heart of Habsburg territory. The Peace of Westphalia, which ended the Thirty Years' War, was concluded later that same year, making this engagement one of the conflict's final major military actions.
