Battle of Pozzolo

Overview

The Battle of Pozzolo also known as the Battle of the Mincio River and Monzambano was fought during the War of the Second Coalition. A French army under General Guillaume Brune crossed the Mincio River and defeated an Austrian force under General Heinrich von Bellegarde. The Austrians were subsequently pushed back to Treviso where the Armistice of Treviso was signed. This truce would lead to the Treaty of Lunéville and the withdrawal of Austria from the war.

Significance

Fought on the Mincio River during the War of the Second Coalition, Pozzolo resulted in a French victory that forced the Austrian army under Bellegarde to fall back to Treviso. The defeat compelled Austria to sign the Armistice of Treviso, a truce that directly preceded the Treaty of Lunéville and Austria's withdrawal from the war. With Austrian casualties exceeding twice French losses, the battle effectively ended active campaigning in the Italian theater and settled the broader coalition conflict on terms favorable to France.
