The Battle of Porto Praya turned on a race to the Cape Colony: Johnstone's Royal Navy fleet had stopped at the neutral Portuguese port of Porto Praya in the Cape Verde islands to take on water, while Suffren's French squadron was bound for the same destination to reinforce its defense before continuing to French possessions in the Indian Ocean. Suffren's decision to attack the British fleet at anchor, in violation of Portuguese neutrality, disrupted Johnstone's readiness and delayed his expedition. The engagement gave the French a critical advantage in the broader contest over the Cape Colony, with British casualties recorded at 147.
