Battle context

The Battle of Portada de Guías was an engagement between Chilean forces under Manuel Bulnes and the forces of the Orbegoso government during the War of the Confederation. The Chilean army fielded between 4,000 and 4,700 troops against an Orbegoso force of 3,200 to 3,500. Casualties on the Orbegoso side reached approximately 1,000, indicating a substantial defeat for the secessionist Peruvian Republic. The engagement was part of Chile's broader military campaign against the Peru-Bolivian Confederation, a conflict that ultimately ended with the dissolution of the Confederation.
