Battle context

At Porrassalmi in Savonia, a Swedish force of roughly 750 men halted the northbound advance of a Russian column five thousand strong. The engagement demonstrated that the Swedish defense in the Savonian theater could hold against numerically superior Russian forces during the Russo-Swedish War of 1788–1790, denying the Russian advance its intended direction of movement. By checking a force more than six times its own size, the Swedish contingent under Gripenberg preserved Swedish positions in the region and prevented a potentially decisive Russian penetration into Savonia at that stage of the campaign.
