The Battle of Porlampi, fought on the Karelian Isthmus in late August and early September 1941, marked a decisive moment in the Continuation War's opening phase. Finnish forces under Talvela and Oesch engaged Soviet units commanded by Gerasimov, Kirpichnikov, and Starikov, with Finland committing approximately 43,000 troops against a Soviet force of around 35,000. The disparity in casualties — roughly 3,400 Finnish against 17,000 Soviet — indicated a lopsided Finnish tactical success. The battle's broader significance lay in what it concluded: it effectively ended the Finnish reconquest of Karelia, the central operational objective Finland had pursued since entering the war in June 1941. By securing this outcome, Porlampi marked the effective culmination of Finnish offensive operations aimed at recovering territory lost in the Winter War, setting the stage for the subsequent static phase of the Continuation War along the Karelian front.
