Overview

The Battle of Azenha Bridge was the first battle of the Ragamuffin War, which took place on the night of the 19th to the 20th of September 1835. It gave way to the capture of Porto Alegre by the rebels on the following day.

Significance

The Battle of Ponte da Azenha opened the Farroupilha Revolution, fought on the night of September 19–20, 1835, under the commands of Cabo Rocha on the rebel Liberal side and José Gordilho for the Empire of Brazil. As the first engagement of the conflict, it carried immediate operational consequence: rebel success at the bridge directly enabled the capture of Porto Alegre the following day, a significant territorial gain that established the revolution's early momentum against imperial forces.
