Battle context

The Battle of Platte Bridge was the culmination of a coordinated summer offensive by Lakota Sioux and Cheyenne forces against U.S. Army positions across a wide stretch of Wyoming and Montana during the Colorado War. Beginning in May and June with raids on army outposts and stagecoach stations, the campaign escalated in July when a large allied force, estimated at roughly 3,000 warriors, converged on the bridge crossing the North Platte River near present-day Casper, Wyoming. The engagement demonstrated the capacity of the allied tribes to concentrate significant military strength and sustain a prolonged offensive against U.S. infrastructure and troop positions. The 120-man garrison defending the bridge and a separate 28-man wagon train escort together suffered 29 killed, while the attacking force absorbed at least eight dead. The battle underscored the vulnerability of thinly spread U.S. Army detachments tasked with protecting overland routes through the region.
