Significance
The Battle of Piteå was the concluding engagement of the Finnish War on Swedish territory. A Swedish naval force under Major C.F. von Hauswolff attempted to cut off the northward retreat of General Nikolay Kamensky's Russian force, which had been defeated five days earlier at Ratan. The Swedish effort to encircle and destroy the retreating Russians was rebuffed, allowing Kamensky's force to escape. The Russian success in breaking through made Piteå the last battle fought on Swedish soil during the war, and it remains the most recent military engagement to have taken place in Sweden.
Tactics
The Swedish force was ordered to use naval assets to intercept and block the northward retreat of the Russian column following the Russian defeat at Ratan. Beyond this encirclement attempt and its repulse, the overview does not describe the tactical dispositions or maneuvers of either side.
