Battle context
The Battle of Pirajá was the largest engagement in the struggle for the independence of Bahia, a campaign that formed a central front in the broader Brazilian War of Independence. Fought near what is now the city of Salvador, the battle brought together roughly 10,000 troops under Pierre Labatut for the Empire of Brazil and Madeira de Melo for Portugal, making it the decisive test of strength in the Bahian theater. Both sides sustained significant casualties, with Portuguese forces losing between 221 and 375 troops and Brazilian forces between 200 and 633. The scale and centrality of the engagement to the Bahian independence effort placed it as the defining military confrontation in that region's transition from Portuguese to Brazilian authority.
